JANUARY 1, 2022 - NORTH BEACH CORPUS CHRISTI
See you in...2022
This is with great sadness, but we are cancelling the 2021 Polar Bear Plunge. We held off as long as possible on making the announcement hoping for better news. The COVID-19 numbers have clearly trended in the wrong direction, and it would be irresponsible to bring people together. Even outdoors. And especially indoors, where the gathering, eating, drinking, and storytelling after the plunge are part of the fabric of this event. If you feel motivated to take a plunge on your own this year, please do, and if you are financially able, please consider donating to ALS TDI to support a cure for ALS. Like a lot of charities, they are hurting, and cancelling events like this doesn't help. Above all please stay safe.
We want to see all of you back January 1, 2022.
A New Year's Day polar bear plunge is an annual tradition shared by communities around the country and the world. The Corpus Christi Polar Bear Plunge is our local take on the tradition! Your registration includes a souvenir t-shirt and a drink from Fajitaville. 100% of your registration payment goes to
ALS TDI, an A-rated nonprofit working to find a cure for ALS. Over the first 5 years of this event, we have raised and donated approximately $50,000.
The top fund raising individual and top fund raising team will each win a prize package, including a night at the Hotel de Ville on North Beach. Once you register, have others support your cause. 100% of donations go to ALS TDI to help cure ALS. Also, anyone who donates or raises $20 beyond basic registration gets a polar bear hat/mitten set. The Corpus Christi Roadrunners will offer a fun run beginning at 11:15 am. There's no extra charge to take part.
Corpus Christi has an ALS support group and a caregivers support group. These groups are here for not only for people living with ALS, but for the friends and family of those who have or had ALS. Learn more
Venue opens. Mascot & banner available for photo ops. Polar bear hats/mittens will be for sale (100% of proceeds go to ALS TDI.) Fajitaville will be open if you want to order something or warm up.
Warm-up fun run on the Beachwalk with the Corpus Christi Roadrunners! Warming up first is the easiest way to jump into cold water. The run will get you back a few minutes before the plunge.
You don't have to be a Roadrunners member, but they are awesome and have fun events all year, so we recommend it. (JOIN HERE)
Take the plunge! Then come inside and warm up. Fajitaville will be open with their full menu and bar.
ABOUT THE PLUNGE
Decades ago, Corpus Christi had a polar bear plunge. Somehow that tradition faded away. Communities around the country and the world gather for a celebratory New Year's Day plunge, and it was time to revive that tradition in Corpus Christi.
The spark came after my dad was diagnosed with ALS in 2011. Since there is no cure yet, one way to address ALS is to focus on positive activity and bringing the community together in understanding and fighting the disease. A Polar Bear Plunge was the natural event to choose. We launched the Corpus Christi Polar Bear Plunge on January 1, 2015 at North Beach. The community embraced it, and it became an annual tradition.
In its first four years, the Corpus Christi Polar Bear Plunge has raised nearly $50,000 for ALS research. We lost my dad in 2018, but until there is a cure, the cause lives on.
I encourage you to plunge for whatever reason moves you - celebration of life, health, gratitude, fun, renewal, adventure, family, friends, fajitas, and hopefully the cause. Register or donate at this link and you will add to this event's running total contribution. This is an A-rated nonprofit and you will receive a tax receipt for 100% of your donation. ALS TDI operates the world's largest research lab entirely dedicated to finding a treatment or cure for ALS.
Thank you for taking part. See you New Year's Day.
